Bio-Bus

The Destroyer came to The Cinematic Underground as a school bus with bunks and van seats in it. It had been converted to run on Vegetable Oil, but it was messy and not convenient for a band on a Schedule. Seth adjusted the layout of the bus, improved the storage, added carpet as well as curtains and reworked the Oil system to make travel much more practical. He did not, however, paint over the sculls or the Yoda stenciled on the outside. And someone at Columbia University stole the antlers on the front.

Mix and the City

While living in New York City, Aaron Johnson eyed a space where he could mix for the bands he was producing. Seth was able to work closely with Aaron in order to produce a room with even sound, a good atmosphere and adequate isolation for all the needs of a studio on the 9th floor of a Manhattan hi-rise.

The Space

The Fray have been working on their second album. The last thing they needed was to worry about was the practice/recording space they were moving into. Seth was there from the start, finding the right space, managing the move in, fixing the little problems, adjusting the acoustics. There were also, admittedly, a lot of fun toys to play with along the way.

Lo-Fi

Many musicians find themselves in a place where they are the one stop shop. They record, produce, sometimes even mix and master, their own music. They are working in their garage, attic or basement. Such is the case with Denver's Alright Alright and that is what the Lo-fi space is all about. This space is just 12' x18' yet it still houses a large format recording console, an upright piano, speakers, guitars, amps and more. Seth was able to put it all together with sound treatment and vibe to provide the ideal space for a Alright Alright's rehearsal and recording. Not only that but it is so close to home it is home.

Library

Ever had a small apartment and high ceilings? Ever had more books than a Carnegie Library? How about filling that space with a 15'x18' bookshelf? But then, for the fun of it, add a murphy bed. The client asked if it was possible; Seth worked on it until it was possible.

Learn as you go

Working on the score for the film JAM with his wife, Seth went from being into music and a techie, to being the engineer, mixer, midi operator, co-composer, editor and more. The film went on to win best documentary at SXSW and will soon be seen on the Sundance Channel.

I think I've heard of Them

Ever heard of The Cinematic Underground? You are most likely thinking of "The Cinematic Orchestra," or "The Velvet Underground" or both. However, TCU is worth hearing about now. A rock show, wrapped in a performance art piece, held together by projected art and safety pins. Seth managed the staging, teched the show, managed load in and out and directed the bus (see Bio-Bus) through the land, from Manhattan to Lexington, Boston to Texas as a whole and all world of stops on the way. During the main tour, no show was canceled due to schedule or gear problems, that is something to be said.

Long Distance Phone

Morocco is a long way from Denver, just ask the guy who just finished a rather nice studio there. Through the process of building the recording studio, Mark Wiederwohl used internet chat sites to refer a world of questions to Seth regarding studio construction and acoustics. Mark took his time, and the advice Seth and others gave him and built an incredible studio. See his pictures at Facebook. http:// www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=597645110

Thick as A

Go see Brick. It is a great film. Intriguing artistic vision, great acting, actors you will recognize from projects they have done more recently, and a score Seth was an integral part of. From engineering and editing, to playing and composing, you hear Seth's work throughout the film. While working on the film, Seth also honed his taste for British biter and cask style brewing.

Bottom of the Barrel

While this is not a complete list, one thing Seth wanted to make sure to include was that he enjoys brewing his own beer.

The sound of Color

Recently Seth Had the distinct pleasure of working with Aaron Johnson and Warren Huart on the upcoming debut album from Jonas Sees In Color. Serving as Second Engineer set was the first person in, last one out, and helped with everything from editing and patching to mic placements to getting food. Look for the album out this summer. It is going to sound great.
